SMD3 and Waga Energy launch a RNG production project in Southwestern France

(Eybens (France), November 7th, 2024) – SMD3 and Waga Energy have signed a contract to produce renewable natural gas at Saint-Laurent-des-Hommes landfill (Southwestern France).

SMD3, a public authority in charge of waste management in the department of Dordogne (Southwestern France), has signed a contract with Waga Energy, a global expert in the production of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) from landfills, to produce RNG at Saint-Laurent-des-Hommes landfill.

Waga Energy will build a purification unit at the landfill in Saint-Laurent-des-Hommes, using its patented WAGABOX® technology to upgrade landfill gas into RNG, a renewable substitute for fossil natural gas. The RNG will be directly injected into the natural gas distribution network to supply households and businesses. The WAGABOX® unit will produce around 57,000 MMBtu of RNG (16.7 GWh) per year, supplying 3,000 local households. Scheduled for 2027, its commissioning will avoid the emission of 4,000 tons of CO2 eq. into the atmosphere annually, by replacing fossil natural gas with RNG.

Located in the city of Saint-Laurent-des-Hommes (Southwestern France), the landfill can process up to 75,000 tons of waste a year. The biogas is currently converted into electricity. Its upgrade into RNG will achieve higher energy efficiency, supplying renewable energy injected directly in the gas pipeline. RNG represents a solution for decarbonizing specifically hard-to-electrify sectors such as industry and transport while helping to boost local energy sovereignty.

Pascal Protano, President, SMD3: “Jointly developed with Waga Energy, this innovative project marks a new step forward in Dordogne’s energy transition. By upgrading the energy produced from the waste of Périgord’s residents to renewable natural gas, we are delivering clean and local energy while reducing our fossil fuel dependency and protecting the planet.

Mathieu Lefebvre, CEO, Waga Energy: “This initiative with SMD3 reflects our shared commitment to supporting the energy transition. We are thrilled to be able to provide the people of Dordogne with a pioneering solution that converts methane into RNG a local and renewable energy offering a genuine alternative to fossil-based gas.”
